Varicose veins are caused by changes in the venous system. When the valves which pump the blood back to the heart become worn and weak, pressure in the superficial veins will increase. These then swell up, causing the condition we call varicose veins. Varicose veins generally occur in the calf or the inside of the thigh. Varicose veins do not cause dangerous blood clots or other serious illnesses.

The most common symptoms are a feeling of internal pressure and heaviness, swelling and visible, twisted veins.

Varicose veins frequently appear after pregnancy and birth. For some, they are hereditary; however, they can also occur in patients who spend a lot of time on their feet at work.
